Unbelievably, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern (RVT) is under renewed threat, with the building’s owners, property developers Immovate, planning to sell the Tavern. The Grade II listing gained last year protects the RVT building, but not its use. The scope of the current council classification for the building would potentially allow the RVT to be sold and converted into an All Bar One or a Wetherspoons.
RVT Future have applied to Lambeth Council for another layer of protection that would unequivocally specify the RVT’s use as an LGBTQ performance venue. Lambeth Council have began a public consultation, ending on Friday 1 July. The Council requires evidence of the RVT's continuous use as an LGBT venue for the last 10 years and RVT Future is appealing for help from patrons.
As Prince's councillors, we wholeheartedly supported the RVT's campaign last year and we are supporting this latest campaign by asking people to have a look for evidence that can be submitted to the Council. The following is urgently needed:
- tickets / stubs for shows
- press articles
- experiences and testimonies – from performers and punters
- photos of shows
- ticket receipts
- flyers and promotional materials
- personal stories backed up with data
Basically, anything that can dated to a particular month between February 2006 - February 2016 (although older proof is helpful too).
Please email your evidence, along with an explanation of your involvement with the Royal Vauxhall Tavern to Rowena Folkes at Lambeth Council (RFolkes@lambeth.gov.uk) and make sure you CC in firstname.lastname@example.org before midday on Friday 1 July. This case number should be included with all submissions: 16/02418/LDCE
Many thanks for your help,
David, Jo and Vaila
